Having won the Scudetto the previous season, A.C. MilanÂ won theÂ European CupÂ thanks to a 4â0 victory againstÂ Steaua BucureÈti, with Dutch duoÂ Ruud GullitÂ andÂ Marco van Basten scoring twice each. It did not defend itsÂ Serie AÂ title however, finishing 3rd in the standings. Milan also won the firstÂ Supercoppa Italiana, beatingÂ SampdoriaÂ in the inaugural contest.
